Clingman's Dome

The highest point in Tennessee is hardly a wilderness experience, but it's quite interesting nonetheless. It's located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the summit contains a futuristic tower giving a 360 degree panorama of the park and the surrounding area.

Clingman's Dome is also the highest point along the 2174.9 mile long Appalachian Trail, although points at the northern end are much more difficult to get to.

As the picture above shows, I got there as the sun was going down, and I got to the top after it had set. The clouds also weren't cooperating with my picture taking efforts. The "hike" to the top is along a half mile asphalt path that gains 300'. Clingman's Dome itself is at 6643'.
